  1. Activator- this tool is used to create a vibrational force into a specific spinal joint or other joints in order to create or correct alignment in that area.  By correcting alignment in that area, the adjustment helps alleviate joint pain and nerve irritation.  The activator sounds like a loud clicker, it makes a clicking noise every time you physically push down on the trigger.  Like many techniques the activator uses an evaluation system to determine which area of the spine need to be adjusted and you can recheck the area to make sure it is stabile after the treatment.

Arthrostim- this is kind of like the activator on steroids, this is an automated adjusting tool that pulses 10 times per second, giving tremendous energy and vibration into a specific area with each adjustment.  This instrument also uses a system to determine which area of the spine or joint needs to be realigned and how much pressure needs to be used.  That is correct, depending on the area you are working on you might use more or less pressure, babies and elderly patients need less of an adjustment force then say a young athlete or construction worker.  Another benefit to this state of the art adjusting tool is that you can realign a patients as they are moving through a range of motion.  Often times patients have decreased range of motion in their neck, shoulder, mid-back, low back or hips, with this tool the patient can flex, extend, rotate, abduct or adduct any joint while being adjusted by the arthrostim.  Having different adjusting tips or attachments for the arthrostim, the chiropractor can be very specific to the area, this makes it easy to adjust areas other than the spine such as the sternum, ribs, TMJ, femur heads, knees, ankles and feet.  Dr. Hamel primarily uses the arthrostim adjusting tool because he finds he can get amazing results for patients suffering with neck pain, migraine headaches, low back pain, sciatica and sports injuries, and the patient can relax through the entire chiropractic treatment.


Manual Adjusting

  1. Manual or Diversified technique- any manual chiropractic technique is going to involve applying a force to an area by the doctors hands to adjust a specific joint in the spine or elsewhere.  With manual techniques most likely the patient will hear a popping sound when they get adjusted, this can be both shocking and relieving at the same time.  The idea behind the popping sound is that a joint that is stuck or stiff is not moving properly and the manual adjustment takes that joint and releases it causing a popping sound from carbon dioxide bubble in the joint space.  The draw back to manual adjusting is the patient has to be very relaxed to get the maximum benefit from the procedure; often times patients are just in too much pain so they are not able to relax and benefit from the realignment.  Dr. Hamel performed manual adjustments for over 14 years and still to this day occasionally does them, in reality he noticed there was a certain percent of the population who would not see chiropractors because they were scared to have their neck popped.  Other alternative health researchers have questioned the severe force that it takes to manual adjust some patients and how good it is to have this done repeatedly over time.  Keep in mind that many chiropractic patients see the benefit in preventative spine and nervous system maintenance so they turn out to be chiropractic patients for life, most coming in for a tune up once a month.

There are some manual adjusting techniques that only focus on realigning the cervical spine while other practitioners focus on correcting the entire spine and any other mal-positioned joints that come up on an evaluation.  Some manual manipulation occurs with the patient lying down, sitting up or even against a wall.  There are also different chiropractic tables around so some you can move the patient up and down or from side to side while adjusting them, some tables have drop pieces that give way with force in order to adjust a specific area.
